Art Basel was founded in Basel, Switzerland, by local gallerists Trudl Bruckner, Balz Hilt, and Ernst Beyeler. Art Basel was launched in 1970 as an experiment. It combined commercial rigor with curatorial ambition, bringing together 90 leading galleries and 30 publishers from 10 countries, and showcasing artists from across Europe and beyond.
The inaugural edition welcomed over 16,000 visitors and introduced thematic exhibitions and forward-looking thematic sectors such as New Trends, establishing Art Basel early on as a site for discovery, experimentation, and international exchange.
The Art Basel fair brings the international art world together. In 2026, it is going to feature 200+ leading galleries and more than 4,000 artists from five continents. Many high-quality exhibitions will take place concurrently in and around Basel, creating a region-wide art week.

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg sits just 9 kilometres from the city centre, making it one of the most conveniently located airports for any major European event. The Swiss exit of the airport connects directly to Basel by road in around 20 minutes under normal conditions — but during Art Basel week, taxi queues at the airport build quickly, and ride-hailing availability becomes unpredictable as demand across the city spikes.
The straightforward solution is a pre-booked private Basel transfer. With BlackLimo Transfer, the chauffeur is already inside the arrivals hall with a name board before the passenger walks through. Luggage is handled, the vehicle is waiting, and the journey into Basel begins immediately. Flight monitoring is included on every booking, so if the flight lands early or late, the pickup adjusts automatically.
For visitors with a full Art Basel schedule starting the same day they arrive, those twenty minutes in a quiet, comfortable vehicle between the airport and the first appointment are worth protecting. Book your Art Basel Transportation in advance because availability during Art Basel week fills significantly faster than at other times of the year.
